When you start your car in the morning, your vehicle typically goes through a “self check” to make sure that all systems are up and ready to go.  But what if one of those lights remains “ON” ….do you know what it means or do you have your owner’s manual to look it up?  If your Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminates on your dash, how long do you drive around before having it properly diagnosed? 

We have had customers come into the shop that say their CEL has been on for months but they know what it’s for and they really don’t worry about it.  Sooo…..what happens if another issue arises, one that is detrimental to the vehicle, but they don’t know about it because the Check Engine Light is ALREADY on ???

Your vehicle’s Check Engine Light is a signal that something “not right” is going on with your car or truck.  The light could be something small but it could also be letting you know that something major is about to happen, if it has not already.  Ignoring the light does not make the problem go away and certainly does not make the repair any less expensive.   The issue could be your engine, transmission, fuel system, cooling system, or exhaust system, etc.  Continuing to drive a vehicle with a fault code could get quite expensive in the long run if left unattended.  Here are a few pointers:

  • If you have a Check Engine Light, make an appointment to have your vehicle diagnosed.  And if the light goes off after a few days, it does not mean that the car fixed itself.
  • If the Check Engine Light (or any light) is RED or FLASHING, immediately pull over and shut off the car.  Continuing to drive the vehicle may be extremely dangerous and could cause immediate damage.  It does not take long for a car to overheat or an engine to self-implode.
  • A tow to the repair shop is less expensive than an engine or transmission replacement.  Even if the car seems to be okay, driving it could cause a lot of internal damage = costs more money.

When in doubt, be conservative in your thinking and have your vehicle inspected immediately by a qualified Automotive Professional.  Asking your friend or even the parts salesman at the local auto parts store can lead you down the wrong path.  Call Das Autohaus at 520-8523 when you have a Check Engine Light and let us get to the bottom of it…


Consistently warm South Carolina days and nights are almost here, and now is a great time for a proper “Spring Cleaning” of your vehicle.  It got you out of town over the cold holidays and has worked hard to keep you safe & warm during the winter months.  Now it’s time to return the favor. 

Items that may have been negatively affected by the cold weather include:

  • Motor oil (are you using the right oil spec & is it time to change ?)
  • Batteries
  • Spark plugs and wires
  • Belts and hoses
  • Brakes
  • Fuel system
  • Suspension components (take care of those squeaks, creaks, & vibrations)
  • Filters and wipers
  • Fluids (antifreeze, brake fluid, etc)
  • Your vehicle’s undercarriage – salt will cause rust & metal damage/deterioration

It is always best to stay ahead of the game and take care of things before your vehicle breaks down and leaves you and your family on the side of the road.  And we all know that MAINTENANCE IS CHEAPER THAN REPAIR

We recently had the opportunity to perform a Preventative Maintenance service on a 2014 Subaru BRZ Limited.  Our long-time customer bought this vehicle as his “fun” car and knows that in order to keep it running efficiently and effectively, maintenance is a MUST.  This vehicle had 19,000 miles on it when it came in for service.  After a good bit of research, our customer decided that he would like to service the rear differential, manual transmission and upgrade the shifter though the mileage was low.  He wanted to change out the conventional differential oil and replace it with synthetic gear oil.  He also wanted to get rid of some of the “slop” from the factory shifter so he upgraded to a Perrin shifter bushing and rear transmission mount.  We were in total agreement and the following pictures show a little bit of what we did.   The car drives like a dream, and our customer loves his fun car even more !
